Wed Feb 15 Jump Rope for heart, picture stories, music math and more

Notice:

We began the day with Jump rope for heart. Jump Rope for Heart is a fundraising and physical activity program based around skipping. It teaches school aged children how to keep fit and healthy, all while having fun and raising vital funds for heart disease research and education.

After Jump rope for heart we wrote about. What it means to be a friend, and they wrote with a focus on how they showed, or received friendship on Valentines day.  I chose this topic as several of the students were sure, yesterday, that they would not receive any Valentines cards.  Which was not true, however, it was a fear and therefore real for the students who thought that.

After recess we looked at how the Inuit tell stories through their artwork.  In walrus ivory carvings we looked at samples of how the Inuit tell stories of their past and their feelings. When you look closely at the birds and animals in Inuit art, you will see that each one often has its own special character. The individual appearance of the creatures in Inuit art grows out of respect that Inuit gave to all living things.  The students then drew a story on an tusk shaped space.  Other students then tried to tell the story they saw looking only at the pictures.  The student who drew the story then told their real story.  In many cases the other students were close to what the class artist was trying to say and other times they were off, however, they brought into focus ideas not intended by the original artist.  It was a lot of fun and most people wanted to share their work.  We did not get through many and so will continue tomorrow if we have time.

This was followed by music with Mrs. Awalt who runs our amazing music program.

After an indoor lunch several of the students went to math group while the remaining went to the computer lab to help Mrs. Cannon's grade 2's set up a powerpoint for presentations they are going to make.  Our class are veritable experts as we have more guided computer time than any other class in the school.  It was great for the students to be experts and help the younger students.  Well done everyone.

After we returned to the class we did a class group weekly reshuffle and finished the day reading from the first Harry Potter while some of the students drew in or made Monster-Book-of Monster covers for their 'read along' books.

Great day everyone.  See you tomorrow.
