the school newsletter went home

Lunch program forms for February.
I love the food program it is nutritious and makes it easy for parents to prepare for the day knowing their child gets a good lunch at school.

Tuesday:  Wednesday
We began the day Writing our FSA grade 4 test treading assignment.  The students had to read two different pieces of writing, one a story, the second a factual account, then compare how the people in the two reading assignments were similar.  The grade 3's and those 4's not doing the FSA read and responded to a 'how so' story.  How the chipmunk got it's stripes.  They read the story then answered questions before writing their own 'how so' story for their own... They wrote about things like how the rabbit got it's long ears, or how the giraffe got it's long neck.

Continued Writing FSA grade 4 test small writing assignment.  The grade 3's also wrote on the same theme in their ME as it is a great theme.  They had to write about a time they did an act of kindness.

After  we had a work period followed up by a science one page report on Non-Renewable energy.   We watched a short video and discussed how Non-renewable energy comes from sources that will run out or will not be replenished in our lifetimes—or even in many, many lifetimes. Carbon is the main element in fossil fuels.

We talked about types of non-renewable energy.  Most non-renewable energy sources are fossil fuels: coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Carbon is the main element in fossil fuels. For this reason, the time period that fossil fuels formed (about 360-300 million years ago)

We talked about how
non-renewable energy came from plants, algae, and plankton grew in these ancient wetlands. They absorbed sunlight and created energy through photosynthesis. When they died, the organisms drifted to the bottom of the sea or lake. There was energy stored in the plants and animals when they died.
We discussed AdvantagesFossil fuels are a valuable source of energy. They are relatively inexpensive to extract. They can also be stored, piped, or shipped anywhere in the world.

We discussed Disadvantages: however, burning fossil fuels is harmful for the environment. When coal and oil are burned, they release particles that can pollute the air, water, and land.

In music the students are learning to play the recorder with Mrs. Awalt.

Some of this information will be on Friday's test.

After lunch we began with silent reading.  Today I am making them read for an extra long time.  A, because some have asked, and B. because it is a great thing to do from time to time.

After silent reading the students did a desk clean then finished off their Science non-renewable resource report.

After lunch we also opened up the bank for the students to get paid for their work.  $2.00 for 10/10 or

 > 10 $1.00  (choir students also get $1.00 per week to be in choir.)

Friday Test Spelling 3 and 5 times tables and be able to sort renewable and non-renewal forms of energy
