A tipi  is a Plains peoples home. It was traditionally made of buffalo hide fastened around very long wooden poles, in a cone shape. Tepees were warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Math:
the fraction sheet we did and corrected today in class

We began with a game called 10 clues
I thought of an object in the class and gave clues about it.  The class asked questions and I gave yes or now answers.
I then told them it was a green water bottle on N's desk.

We then came up with 6 clues about the green water bottle.  The class came up with clues like
I am green
I hold water
I am near when you are thirsty
I am hard

We then worked as a group to put them in order of least obvious to most obvious clues.  The class chose more than one order, that would have worked but finally came up with.

I am green
I am hard
I am near when you are thirsty
I hold water

We then played a game where I had the boys go to the front of the class and the girls to the back.  I gave clues about the boy that was thinking about. (I am wearing black, I have black hair) The boys who did not fit the clues sat down.  We gave more and more clues until there was only one boy standing.  We did the same with all the girls with the boys trying to guess which girl I was thinking about.

The students then had to do 10 clues about themselves in their M.E.

At 9:30 our school counselor, Melinda, came in and talked to the students about a book she read last week, " A Thought is a lot."   The main idea being that Thoughts are powerful
.

Melinda our counselor came into our class for 5 visits
5 questions to ask each to each other
The students got into pairs and did rock paper scissors.  The winner then chose if they wanted to ask or answer the questions first

What makes you feel happy?
What makes you feel sad?
What makes you feel angry?
What makes you feel scared?
What makes you feel excited?

Melinda challenged the students to draw a picture of a thought and how it makes them feel for next week. We may do a computer activity or an art activity to show the concept.  The art idea I like is Matisse style Thoughts are powerful like....

After recess the students had time to work on their clues.

We followed that with a math fraction sheet.  The same sheet will be used in tomorrow's test.  The students worked by themselves or in groups   I am trying to teach them math thinking.  So when someone answered that 3/8 was 3/5 I had the students understand that the person was really saying 3 were shaded and 5 were not shaded.  The thinking was good but the answer was not what we were looking for.  Like the question, which word does not belong with the rest, cow, dog, owl, sheep. The obvious answer is owl because owl is the only bird, but the answer could also be sheep because the rest are all three letter words.  We looked at the fraction the students colored 5/9

We talked about how different squares could be shaded to make different designs but the fraction colored was still 5/9. The most interesting and creative (although not quite correct) was the following.... Can you see how this does make 5/9th's....

In the afternoon we began by reading then I gave the students time to add to or finish their 3-d tipi.

This was followed by our first Recognition assembly with the odd divisions presenting. We will present certificates at the next Recognition assembly.

Great day everyone.... Lots of games... lots of movement.... lots to make us think. Study for the test tomorrow.
