Halloween

We began the day with a writing assignment instead of spelling. The writing assignment was to finish the scenario. The scenario was: on Halloween night, tonight, they are so tired that they fall asleep with a Halloween costume on and wake up as the creature they are dressed like. They are to write one page and draw a picture to say what happened to them the day after Halloween as the creature. The students then worked with coloured clay to make a coloured clay picture on a paper plate like they were looking in a mirror.  We then had one of the Halloween treats brought in by the students.   The students voted to eat A’s rice crispy treats first.

 

 

After recess we had our spelling test.  We have three spelling lists, so to the students while waiting for their list word they drew a picture of a skeleton on the back.  The students then vote the 5 best drawings.  We ate some more tasty Halloween treats.

After lunch we went to buddies where the students helped the little buddies cut, paste and design a very cool pumpkin.

After buddies we did our class weekend clean,  passed out  the rest of the Halloween treats and waited for a special visitor to the class.  Mr. Clark, a first nations educator who tells First Nations stories to classrooms all around the district came in and told us about the history of First Nations peoples in the area.  He then told us the story of Zunika and the 4 boys.  The stories that Mr. Clark tells us have been given to him by elders to share with the students in our school district.

Spelling test tomorrow...


Tomorrow is Orange and Black Day
Okay to bring snacks for afternoon.
(we found that little kids costumes get wrecked by the end of the day so that is why we went to orange and black day)

We began the day with silent reading.  The students enjoy reading and for the most part get right down to reading when they enter the school. 

After reading the students had to write 5 scary opening sentences.  Each sentence had to focus on a single sense.  A scary sound, taste, the feel and taste of something and finally a spooky smell. For example 'T' wrote " I smelled a cookie on the table then it became my brothers smelly sock...."  'E' wrote, "The taste of broccoli makes me sick every time I eat it.  This time it actually tasted like green apple candy."

We then went to library and learned about e-books at the public library.  The students then took out a book or two one of them with chapters.

After recess the students marked their math sheets from yesterday using a calculator. This activity gives the students a chance to self correct their work and spot their own mistakes, which is important in any learning situation.

The math today was followed by Handwriting practice.  This year the students can begin to write in pen when they have mastered handwriting.











At lunch Recess some of the class (those on our school soccer league) played in a Staff and Student soccer game in the gym.  It was great fun and everyone worked up a sweat.  

After lunch I read the story Monsterator by  Kieth Graves.  The book is  about a boy, Master Edgar Dreadbury who discovers the Monsterator, a machine that changes people into monsters in this spooky Halloween adventure.  The book has a flip chart example of the different monsters that Edgar Deradbury becomes.  The students then worked by themselves, in pairs or in small groups to come up with their own flip monster book. 

E and S showed us a song and a game that they learned at guides. They selected 5 students and assigned them roles,cheer leader, farmer, teacher, cheetah.  Each role came with actions.  Thanks E and S for coordinating this complex repeating song with actions.

Mrs. K came and took a group of students and their M.E. books to offer them extra support on English, phrasing, grammar.  They focus on correct usage of the language not on spelling.

A and J and C did a play about recycling.  They wanted to teach us about correct recycling practices.  Great job girls.  It is always important to remember to Recycle, reduce and to re-use. 

Thank you everyone for a great day... Enjoy the dance and see you all bright and eager in the morning.... the longest kid day of the year... let's all keep our fingers crossed that the rain holds off....

Pro-D day tomorrow NO SCHOOL

We began the day with 10 min of silent reading followed by our weekly spelling test. The students are working in three spelling groups depending on their reading level, green, yellow and pink.  On the back of their test the students like the weekly art challenge.  This week it was to draw the best Jack-O-lantern.

After our spelling test we went to the library and learned how to take care of library books from our librarian.  This was followed by a book exchange.  Students are allowed to take out 2 books a week, 3 or 4 if we are doing a project.

After recess I read the book"There's A Nightmare In My Closet" by Mercer Mayer. The book deals with a boy who decides to get rid of the nightmare in his closet.  It is a delightful book and teaches how to deal with fears.  The students then wrote about one of their fears in their M.E. duo tang.  They were to write about a fear without saying exactly what they are afraid of.  One student wrote, "The fear of stinging stingers hitting my skin," another wrote, "It has sharp, pointy and scary teeth."  The students wrote about how their fear feels to them, where their fear came from and how they think they might overcome it.

We had a surprise visit from the Kinders who came into the class and gave a presentation on how to move in the hallways.  Thanks kinders we will try to walk and not run and we will stay to one side, just like cars on the road.

Many students in our class volunteer in our kitchen, serving lunch for the rest of the school.  They are taught how to handle food and it is a great life experience for each of the participating students.

After lunch for Social Studies we talked about Eastern Longhouses. Longhouses were so important to the Iroquois way of life that, even today the Iroquois call themselves “the People of the Longhouse.

(On another Socials period we will be talking about the Longhouses of the B.C. coast which are made very differently because of the wonderful cedar trees).

We finished the day in the Computer Lab finishing work or Free time for those students who are finished their work.

Spelling test tomorrow

We began our morning using flyers from Save On Foods to spend exactly $100.64.  The students cut out the items and the prices, no individual item can cost more than $9.99,  The students worked in pairs, cutting, adding, estimating, writing and gluing.  The activity not only taught them how to use the calculator, but how to estimate,  how to prepare a budget and learn that math is both practical and fun.

After math we wrote in our ME (morning exercise) an opinion essay on which is better, Christmas or Halloween.  The students had to list the positive aspects of Christmas and the positive aspects of Halloween then make a decision which one they think is best. 

 N read all the first sentences and quality of artwork in the M.E. books and gave out two prizes to the students with her choice of best work.  Congrats K and AM for winning the prizes.


After Lunch we played group games in the gym then helped set up the gym for the recognition assembly.  Today two students in our class were given awards.  S and D won for their amazing, positive, attitude and willingness to give their best at everything. Thank you S & D.

Welcome to week 2

Mrs Schneider teaches the class Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until recess.  We begin each day with 30 min of focused reading.  A child's reading skills are important to their success in school and work. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative activity for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. Reading and writing are important ways we use language to communicate.   Please encourage your child to read every night.

After Recess we talked about classroom routines then the students began the week with Mr. Wilson writing in their Morning Exercise (M.E.) duotang.  The students wrote about "If they could be any animal they would be a......"

After Lunch we had P.E. followed by social studies where we looked at the difference between facts and opinions.
