We began the day with spelling practice. The students do a series of activities which helps them memorize and understand the spelling words in context.
After spelling we talked about words and their opposites in the context of peace and war. beauty/ ugly, heal/hurt, build/destroy were some of the word pairs the students decided to visualize and prepare draw. We are preparing a power-point presentation for the Remembrance day assembly.
After recess the students worked in the computer lab with a painting program to draw two separate pictures, one representing a peace word and the second a war word. It is amazing and powerful. I will save it as a movie and put it up on our blog later in the week.
After Lunch we had silent reading followed by Gym Class with our PE specialist
After P.E. We ended the day with a WITS presentation by constable Lisa our community liaison police officer. Students are moving beyond just the WITS program to the WITS LEADS PROGRAM for older children.
The WITS LEADS Program provides strategies and resources that are developmentally appropriate for older elementary aged students so that they can become WITS LEADerS. Like the WITS Program, WITS LEADS is a literature based program with over 30 dynamic activities that may be integrated throughout a variety of subject areas.
The WITS LEADS Program teaches five problem-solving strategies to help children deal with conflict and keep safe: Look and listen, Explore points of view, Act, Did it work? and Seek help. Click on the links below to find the resources to you need to get started with WITS LEADS!
