Wednesday January 27

Notices:

Family Literacy day was a great school success.
Thanks to those parents who showed up to read with their children.
Great to see you all.

We began the day catching up on work.  The students worked hard to finish work in Socials, Language arts, Science and M.E. to make sure they are ready for our next Social studies topic on explorers, the fur trade and trading posts.  During this unit the students will design and set up their own Trading post.  They will also be learning basic business planning, managing money, keeping ledgers, etc.  More on this later as we get moving on the unit.  Part of the making and selling stuff is done if they have finished their other school work.

After recess, in honour of family literacy day we began our first novel study on the short novella "Velveteen Rabbit." The Velveteen Rabbit chronicles the story of a stuffed rabbit and his quest to become real through the love of his owner,

“Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'

The students read by themselves and or in small groups.  We will be doing a host of Novel study activities and delve deeply into the gems hidden this story.

At 11:30 the students went to music with Mrs. Awalt where they are learning the recorder.

After lunch we worked on making paper puppets that we can use to animate the story of the Velveteen Rabbit.  This was followed by our Recognition assembly where four of our students were given Salmon awards for hard work.

Well done everyone see you tomorrow.
