Thursday January 28

Notices:

We began the day with a reading and writing assignment on the Ozone layer.  A Science topic.  We are looking at energy.  We have been talking about the sun as the source of all energy on earth.  Exploring the topic of the Ozone layer helps the students realize that all energy is not good, or that too much energy can have negative harmful effects on mineral, plant and animal life on earth.

At 9:30 we went to library to learn more about searching for information and were introduced to grade appropriate books by Mr. K.  The students then had an opportunity to take out books.

After recess the Grade 4 students carried on with the longer write from the provincial FSA test.  The writing topic is "finding a special pair of glasses"  When writing fiction the students have to consider characterization, setting, plot, perspective and imagery. The grade 3 students worked on a one page report on the Ozone layer based on our discussion and information at the start of the day.

At 11:30 the students went to Music with Mrs. Awalt where they are learning the recorder.

After Lunch the students had P.E. where they are working on group games.  After P.E. the students designed a cover for the Novelette Velveteen Rabbit,  and made characters to put into a stop action movie on the book.

The grade 4's went to the computer lab to work on FSA online component of the test.  The grade 5's joined us and helped the grade 3's with their Velveteen rabbit puppets.  We opened the bank and those students with work completed cashed out their work. This took us up to the end of the day.

On the test will be spelling, A description of the ozone layer and what it does, and some ordering in math.

take care everyone. I will post the pictures shortly.

See you all bright and early tomorrow.

Notices:

Family Literacy day was a great school success.
Thanks to those parents who showed up to read with their children.
Great to see you all.

We began the day catching up on work.  The students worked hard to finish work in Socials, Language arts, Science and M.E. to make sure they are ready for our next Social studies topic on explorers, the fur trade and trading posts.  During this unit the students will design and set up their own Trading post.  They will also be learning basic business planning, managing money, keeping ledgers, etc.  More on this later as we get moving on the unit.  Part of the making and selling stuff is done if they have finished their other school work.

After recess, in honour of family literacy day we began our first novel study on the short novella "Velveteen Rabbit." The Velveteen Rabbit chronicles the story of a stuffed rabbit and his quest to become real through the love of his owner,

“Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'

The students read by themselves and or in small groups.  We will be doing a host of Novel study activities and delve deeply into the gems hidden this story.

At 11:30 the students went to music with Mrs. Awalt where they are learning the recorder.

After lunch we worked on making paper puppets that we can use to animate the story of the Velveteen Rabbit.  This was followed by our Recognition assembly where four of our students were given Salmon awards for hard work.

Well done everyone see you tomorrow.

Tuesday January 26 th

Notice:
Family literacy day tomorrow...
feel free to drop in first thing until recess 10 to read with, read to, or listen to your child read.  All Welcome including siblings if they would like to o read with, read to, or listen to their sibling read

Kindergarten registration is filling up and may even be full for next year.

We began the day writing in our M.E. We are writing a story about our science topic Energy, and the fact that all energy comes from the sun.  The students wrote about the journey of a beam of light from the sun to earth in some form then back to space.  It could be beam of light - absorbed by a flower - a bee drinks the nectar - makes honey and wax - someone takes the wax and makes a candle - the candle is lit by a little girl on her birthday cake - the light travels through a window and back into space.   We watched Bill Nye the science guy episode on light while the students worked.

The students worked on their spelling words for the week filling out the worksheets to rewrite, unscramble, correct mis-pelled, find missing words, add endings and middle bits.  This weeks words focus on oy and oi, initial ch sounds and endings s, es, ed, and ing.

After recess we went tot he computer lab and worked on Power point projects on energy. The students created a little moderator character to explain facts about renewable and or non-renewable energy.  The students copied a sentence off the internet then found a picture to illustrate the point and their character summarized the information (put it in their own words)

In the afternoon the grade 3's went to swimming lessons at the Esquimalt pool, the grade 4's were split between Mrs. C and Mrs. T.  Great job at the pool everyone.
