Notice:
We began the day with a WITS presentation by our school police Liaison person constable DANI. Who talked about using ideas from our WITS training. Even though the students have had the WITS training in earlier grades, in grade 3 and 4 the program begins to change to meet the needs of older children and what they might face. The WITS Primary Program teaches children in Kindergarten to Grade 3 to make safe and positive choices when faced with peer conflict. The WITS acronym - Walk away, Ignore, Talk it out, and Seek help - provides a common language that children and the adults in their environments can use to talk about and respond to negative things they face.
Constable Dani read us the story, Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun. In the story a girl is teased by a boy named Ralph. He says things like "Lucy, Lucy, eats stinky food that puts us all in a big, bad mood!” How can Ralph be so mean, Lucy wonders? Lucy is one of a kind, and Ralph loves to point that out. Lucy’s defining moment comes when Ralph truly needs her help. Because she knows what she stands for, Lucy has the courage to make the right choice. This charming story empowers children to always do the right thing and to be proud of themselves even when they are faced with someone as challenging as Ralph.
We then went to Library where the students had to continue searching books on the computer library catalog and finding the books on the shelf. The students then had a book exchange and we headed out for recess.
After recess we had an unexpected move to the computer lab as our class was being fitted with a TECH package. Very cool, This system allows us to use the features to easily use the computer to present ideas and information in a slicker way than with our document camera and projector. We use the technology now but it is a bit clunky compared to the way it can be used now. In the computer lab the students did research for their science ecosystems in a box.
After lunch the students went to the gym where they worked on soccer and ball handling skills.
After Gym the students had 20 minutes of silent reading. Thursday silent reading time is always fun as we have new books from our library exchange in the morning. In fact one student did not want free time on the computer, choosing instead to read her new exciting library book. It must be an exciting book 'A'.
The students were then given time to work on their mini books from last week patterned on the book 'Spoon'. In the book we meet Spoon. He's always been a happy little utensil. But lately, he feels like life as a spoon just isn't cutting it. He thinks Fork, Knife, and The Chopsticks all have it so much better than him. But do they? And what do they think about Spoon? A book for all ages, Spoon serves as a gentle reminder to celebrate what makes us each special. For example one student is writing about a pair of slippers that is envious of other types of foot wear because, as a slipper, she never gets to explore the world....
