Wednesday March 9

We began the day working on a new mini book based on a book by the same author we did last time written and illustrated by Antoinette  Portis, called "Not a stick"  The little character when asked why he has a stick answers it's not a stick it's a fishing rod, it's conducting an orchestra, painting a masterpiece, or slaying a dragon.  The students are writing their own mini book about all the things they could imagine that stick to be.  The students are showing a lot of creativity and imagination.

For math today we worked on 4x4 sudoku puzzles which challenges mathematical thinking and problem solving in a fun way.  Sukoku is great and many people make Sudoku a part of their daily schedule because it refreshes them and allows them to meet the other commitments with renewed energy and vigor.  Playing Sudoku also helps students feel a sense of mastery – this is one reason why the game is so popular.  

The students then went off to music and practicing reading music while playing the recorder.

In the afternoon we had silent reading followed by a writing project to show metaphor.  which is a figure of speech containing an implied comparison, in which a word or phrase  used of one thing is applied to another. For example, "the curtain of night" or "all the world's a stage."

We ended the day with our recognition assembly. Four of our students received raven awards for creativity, honoring, and being eager to learn. Well done K,K, M and T.

Tomorrow we are doing crafts for stores on Friday so bring in any recycling or inexpensive simple craft things to work on.

Happy Dr. Seuss Day

On March 2, 1904, Theodor Seuss Geisel was born. Does that name sound familiar? Later in life he was known as Dr. Seuss, even though he was not a doctor. Many people felt that his books were like medicine. Dr. Seuss was a famous children’s book author who wrote many books. These beloved books have been read by millions of children. You’ve probably read many of his books, as well.

We read, listened to and wrote about Dr. Seuss as well as used the I-pads to make video trailers of his books.  Great day everyone.

Tuesday March 1

Some of the classes have had several cases of Fifth Disease.  

Fifth disease, which is especially common in kids between the ages of 5 and 15, usually produces a distinctive red rash on the face that makes a child appear to have a "slapped cheek." The rash then spreads to the trunk, arms, and legs.  Fifth disease is actually just a viral illness that most kids recover from quickly and without complications.

We began the day with writing and math then went to the computer lab after recess. In the afternoon we went swimming. 

This was our last swimming day for the grade 3's.  It was an amazing experience for our grade 3's to experience this great program.  The students had lots of fun and learning taking place at their different skill levels.  Today was more about having fun in the pool, using the diving boards and slides as well as the whirl pools etc.  Great day everyone and go swimming on weekends and holidays instead of vegetating in front of the electronics.

Food for Fun Due Monday

We began our Friday with the Usual Friday Test.  The test the weekly spelling, one by two digit multiplication, and synonyms.  After they finished their tests they worked on finishing up all the work from the week.  Tests are marked and sent home.

Two classes of grade 4's and 5's were away so our class all got to be lunch monitors for one day.  Everyone did great, thanks for being great Tillicum Citizens.

Thursday February 25

We began the day with Math, reviewing and reviewing and practicing and practicing one digit two digit multiplication.  All the questions had the same single digit  number (5) the two digit number were random, like 5 x 32  or 5 x 25 or 5 x 55.  After reviewing and reviewing and practicing, students were aloud to work in groups to help each other try and understand how to do it.

We then had library where the students are learning about different parts of Canada through stories of each region.

After recess we had silent reading, people also volunteered to try and finish the math.  This was interesting as we examined the online world of National Geographic Animal Jam.  Well A and M presented it.  I found it interesting that they could name the many and diversified parts of this world with weird and wonderful names but could not name half of the provinces of Canada.  I guess you know the world you explore.  Ha Ha.

This was followed by Music where they continue their recorder work along with reading music.  Great skill, and we are so lucky to have Mrs. Awalt.

After lunch the students went to P.E.

In the afternoon we did portraits in the style of Amedeo Modigliani who was an Italian painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He is known for portraits in a modern style characterized by elongation of faces and figures, that were not received well during his lifetime, but later found acceptance.

Tomorrow's test will have spelling and one digit by two digit multiplication.  The single digit will be the number 5 the two digit number will be random.
