Catching up, Haida villages, Handwriting and the Buffalo

We began the day going over all the work that needs to be finished before next Thursday in time to be counted for the upcoming Report card.

After M.E. the students went to library where they looked at news reports on the Highway of Hero.  The students then had a library exchange.  The students are allowed to have two books out at any one time, one should be a chapter book for their daily silent reading. (they can also have a chapter book from home)

After recess we read chapter 12 and 13 from the Fantastic Mr. Fox (there are 18 chapters). The students retell the chapter in their own words and add a small picture to go with it.

Students were read the book, If You Give A Cat A Cupcake, by Laura Numeroff where he'll ask for some sprinkles to go with it. When you give him the sprinkles, he might spill some on the floor. Cleaning up will make him hot, so you'll give him a bathing suit . . . and so on and so on.... the students began a mini-book based on the book

In socials there was a bonus one page report on the Haida Villages.  Coastal people lived in villages with as few as two or three houses or larger villages of up to 15 or 20 houses.  People traveled during the spring, summer and autumn but usually spent winters in their villages.

We then had an extra Gym period with the grade 5's.  It was lots of fun and the students worked up quite a sweat.

Close to lunch our grade 4 servers headed off to give out the hot lunch program to the rest of the students in the school.

After lunch students had time to finish work or read for 20 minutes.   After reading the students practiced their handwriting, they had to write a word for every letter of the alphabet.  The words had to be a minimum of three letters long.  Most students chose longer words.  Nice to see most students do not take the easy road.

We spent the remainder of the afternoon talking about and watching video's on the Bison also know as the buffalo.   We will be examining the multi uses of the buffalo by the plains peoples, followed by the seal for the Inuit and the Cedar tree for the West coast.

Remembrance day Celebration

Our Remembrance day Ceremony was a a very solemn, sincere, and special Assembly.  I was very proud of all the students who showed the proper spirit and attitude.  Well done everyone.

Some of the things Div. 4 students have done in the last week are: Finished a unit on Graphing in Math, learned about Remembrance Day and attended our school's ceremony on Monday, and worked on their Beaver Reports in Science.

Most students have finished their research reports, and everyone has put in a great effort on their research and writing. First, we watched a National Geographic documentary and read books about Beavers, then wrote notes under the headings: Description, Habitat, Food, Young, Other Interesting Facts, and learned how to write References at a grade 4 level. Then they wrote rough drafts of paragraphs, then wrote their final copies.

In Science, students also learned about animal adaptations in 6 different habitats around the world.

Overall, our class has been very keen to learn, excited about the projects we've done, and conscientious. Our class was very respectful during the Remembrance Day ceremony and Mr. W took a picture of the 2 students who carried our class' wreath. Keep up the excellent work Div. 4!

Our Remembrance day Assembly is on Monday

Students in Cubs, Scouts, Cadets, Brownies etc can come in uniform to be part of the Colour Party at the assembly.  Families are welcome to join us at the assembly as well.

We began the day with our weekly Spelling test, Unit 5.  Because we are working with three different spelling lists, I give the students a drawing assignment for the back side.  Todays drawing assignment was to incorporate a poppy into a design.

After spelling we continued reading from the short novella, (a story longer than a short story but shorter than a novel), The Fantastic Mr. Fox.  I read and the students listen and summarize each chapter and add a small picture to go along with it.   Today we read 3 chapters.  From Mr. Fox has a Plan to Mrs. Fox gets a Surprise.

After recess we worked on Remembrance day wreath version 2 then did a Remembrance day one sentence write with a picture to go with it.  The results are always amazing when students are challenged to write a short statement that holds a lot of meaning.  I will post some of the results next week.

In the afternoon we went to Buddies where the students helped the grade 1's put together an A-B-C --Z book.  This activity involved a lot of cutting and pasting and there were a few strange errors that complicated the process.  I think maybe they stopped listening to Mrs. Dagg after A, B, C... they thought they knew what was happening but 7 had to restart for various reasons.

After Buddies we had a special guest, C's Mom and two small snakes.  The students were given a brief overview of snakes, had all their questions answered by C, and had lots of up and close time with the snakes (if they wanted)  Thanks to C and his mom.   It was amazing.
