If you are a crafter sign up for a spot during our Parent Seasonal Craft Fair

We began the day in the computer lab making a power point presentation for a forest ecosystem.  We looked at producers, consumers (herbivores and carnivores and omnivores) and decomposers.

After recess some students helped in the computer lab and the students finished their science in their duo-tang.  Color, title, border, picture and name.

This was followed by a wet, wet, fire drill by the Saanich Fire department.

We had food for fun then after lunch we began with silent reading then we went to buddies where the students listened and read to our little grade 1 buddies.

We did a quick clean, show and share, a quick game of silent ball then the students were off to Gym.

Great day everyone.   We will do our spelling test on Monday.

Last day of Parent Teacher Interviews

It was delightful to meet you all and see you with your great children.

We began the day working on the final touchup to our old work and opened up the bank to pay out the students for their hard work.

 This was followed by Science where we looked at producers, consumers and decomposers and the interconnectedness of the various living parts of the eco-system.

After recess we had library, continued with our science then the students finished the morning at music and early dismissal.

Spelling Words for the week of October 11

This weeks words focus on words with the long O sound and how to distinguish between one and two-syllable words. 

This Weeks Words:

rocket, pocket, hold, told, often, grow, throne, so, sew, most, almost, both, coach, open also

We began the day doing spelling sheets that focus the students spelling words.  This was followed by a gym period where we played group games.

The Victoria Ballet performed for the School.  An amazing performance of athleticism, devotion and beauty.

After Recess we started with handwriting and moved onto reading out loud.  We read the book "There is a Nightmare in my closet."

Five-year-old Christopher firmly believes that there's a Nightmare hiding in his closet, but no one takes him seriously. Taking matters into his own hands, Christopher confronts his Nightmare and calms his fears. There are some very amusing twists and turns along the way and a surprise ending that you won't soon forget.

The students took turns reading out loud with emotion and feeling to depict the message in the words and images.  I find that using simple books and teaching how to read with feeling and emotion makes the students much better readers.

The students went to music with Mrs. Awalt where they worked on movement and rhythm.

Tour De Rock

After lunch we began with  silent reading followed by sharing.  E shared a drawing of her family that she had drawn on the weekend.

In Socials we studied the raven and his place as a cultural hero to the northwest first nations.  We talked about and read and watched a video on the Myth about how Raven stole the sun and brought light to the world.

Our Mailboxes

We ended the day with a desk clean.  It is quite amazing how much clutter children can create in a few weeks.

Please remember tomorrow the students probably only need a snack as they are dismissed before lunch.

Ms. Nadeau and I are looking forward to this new school year.  Please regularly follow our blog to keep up with what we are learning and doing in our class.  We will update the blog regularly starting next week.  Use this blog as a tool to have conversations with you child about their learning, their class, their school, their community and how you and your family fit within it. 

We are starting our year with a question.  All learning starts with a question.  The first and most important question we are starting with is "If you had all the money you needed, what are 25 things you would most want."  Is it a trick question?  All question are trick questions.  I look forward to your child's response and also your input and feedback to your child, which is vital in helping your child understand what you as a family value, want and need.  Welcome to our modest attempt at inquiry learning.

Scientist of the Day!

Next Monday we will begin "Scientist of the Day". Each student has chosen a short, simple experiment to present to the class. These experiments as well as a letter with more information was sent home yesterday. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns! Miss K

I have scheduled the experiments for every Monday after noon! Parents and family are welcome to come and watch!
