This notice went home with all the grade 3 students

 

 

Congratulations to Ms. Kushnir who has won the posting to work Mondays in Our Class.  

Ms. Kushnir is great and I have worked with her in the past.  Many of you may have seen her around the school as she teaches the ESL and in Mrs. English's class.  She brings a wealth of skill, humor and talent to our class.  Welcome Ms. Kushnir 

We  began the day with our musical selection it was 'Everybody Wants to be a Cat' vs 'Never have a friend like me' from Aladin.  'Everybody Wants to be a Cat.'  Three wins in a row and the song is now moved into the finals.  We will compare two new songs next week.

 

After our musical selection we talked about the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock's 13 day ride the length of the island to raise money for cancer.  They have raised over 20 million dollars so far in the years since they started.  The class wrote information about the ride in the shape of a bicycle.

The class then had their weekly spelling, science, socials, math test.

After recess the class walked with many other classes in the school to greet the Police Riders in front of Coast Capital at the mall.  The students sang, cheered and gave a great Tillicum welcome to the riders.

 Many of our class students volunteer around the school.  

 After lunch the students had 15 minutes to finish up the weeks work and if they were finished that they could read or draw.  After that we went to buddies with Mrs. Dagg's grade 1 class.

We again had a short finish work period before cleaning up and heading off to p.e. in the gym with our P.E. teacher.

Friday Test

Tomorrow, and every Friday students will be given a test.

 I find that regular tests take away anxiety in the future when the schools depend more on tests for marks.  Also I let them know what will be on the test on the blog, which also helps them with test anxiety.

Bring in your photo picture forms for Photo Day Next Week 

We began the day with a math worksheet.  Basic addition. The students completed a worksheet, however on the back they were to write out and show the hardest math addition question they thought they could do.  Very interesting.  E wrote out and solved using  31 digit numbers.

   Next week we start fractions.  The students raced to see how quickly they could finish.  Many are not fast, but I find the extra pressure will help them in the long run.  After the first 5 or 6 have finished I stop the rest so they don't have to feel like they are last.

After Math the students went to library with Mr. K where they are learning about finding and sorting books according the the call numbers. Some students got to take turns answering  on the Library smart board then all students did a sorting activity on the computer using call numbers   All books in the library are assigned a unique call number, usually found on the spine of the book. The call number is a kind of code that represents what the book is about.  Books are filed on the shelves in call number order so that books on similar subjects are shelved together. To find a book on the shelf, you must be able to decode the call number.  

After recess we began handwriting.  I was amazed at the enthusiasm and interest in handwriting the class had.  Without a doubt as a class this class are the most advanced hand writers that I have ever seen.  after writing out a words cat, hat, rat etc.. We then did a handwriting art activity.  The students folded a piece of paper then wrote out their name along the fold.  They then took it to the window and traced it out.  The results they turned into a creature.  One of the students KG said she thought hers looked more like road kill.  Ha Ha.  And so it did.  I think the boys will buy in better if I say road kill creatures rather than just creatures.

At 1130 the students went to music with Mrs. Awalt.  Continuing the rhythm, movement, listening, singing that they do in the 3 20 minutes of music they get on Tues and  Wed. 

After lunch The students had P.E. with our P.E. specialist. 

After P.E. we continued with Science using themes from the new B.C. Curriculum

grade 4 All living things and their environment are interdependent.

grade 3 Living things are diverse, can be grouped, and interact in their ecosystems.

The students both grade 4 and 3 looked at and discussed the antarctic food chain and then had to draw it out in a rectangular worksheet.  We watched several youtube video's on the Antarctic food chains.  Next week we will integrate the concept into art and language arts by writing stories about how the creatures are dependent on each other and how they react, this will be followed by reports about would happen by taking individual things out thing out of the environment (chain).  

We ended the day with the students finishing off their i-pad Terry Fox projects.

We began the day working on their  M.E, writing assignment from yesterday "If I were an animal".  the students had to think about themselves and their qualities then think of an animal with similar qualities.  It was very interesting how the students saw themselves.  With each ME the students write, draw, add a title, color and a border.  I am proud of the work they are producing which is of higher quality than I thought.  Well done everyone

Our music challenge today was Aristocats ' Everybody Wants to be a Cat' vs Rapunzel "Rapunzel Knows Best."  Aristocats won.

 

In math the students worked on two digit + two digit addition.   Some students use the up and down method you are familiar with and others use the side by side method.  Both work well and many students can do both.  This and next week we will be focusing on the side by side 10's then 1's method.  (The side by side with subtraction means no borrowing which is easier for some students)

The students are starting a unit on Fractions with me starting next Tuesday.   

After recess the students were put into groups, given an I-pad and used the program ' Book Creator' to make a tribute to Terry Fox.  A student who knew how to use the program picked a group.  We have 6 i-pads so 6 groups were formed of 3 or 4 students.

At 11:33 the students wen to Music with Mrs. Awalt.  They are learning about rhythm, reading rhythm charts and how the words drive the melodies of songs.  As well Mrs. Awalt gets the students to move and use their bodies to respond to music and rhythm.

After lunch the students read for 30 minutes then the whole school went outside and ran clockwise around the school for our Terry Fox run. (we explained how students are not allowed to go through the parking lot except on special occasions like today.) Thank you to the spirit leaders who planned and organized the event, and thank you to all the students who brought in nickles, dimes etc.

We finished up the day making sure our Socials, ME and Science books were looking good for Meet the Creature day tomorrow.
